During his time as a conservation officer and in private practice afterwards Jonathan was responsible for running and advising on several grant schemes, including acting as lead officer for the Settle to Carlisle Railway Conservation Area Partnership. Since establishing JWRC he has provided technical advice on grant works to the Orkney Island Council and to the Yorkshire Dales Millenium Trust.

Previous Projects

Stromness & Kirkwall Townscape Heritage Initiative Schemes

The Orkney Islands Council, the Heritage Lottery Fund, and Historic Scotland / Historic Environment Scotland funded two Townscape Heritage Initiative grant schemes in Orkney, in Stromness and later in Kirkwall. These offered grants to property owners within the conservation areas for building repairs and for bringing vacant space back into use.

Between 2012 and 2014 we were engaged to monitor grant works on site in Stromness, to ensure that they were being carried out to the required standard and conservation specification and to certify payments. We subsequently drafted the text of a repair and maintenance manual that was published by the Council.

Between 2015 and 2018 Jonathan was Technical Adviser for the Kirkwall THI grant scheme. This involved visiting the buildings, examining the specifications, schedules, drawings, quotations and other documents submitted with the applications, and assessing whether they were in accordance with good conservation practice and the eligibility criteria and technical guidance set out by Historic Environment Scotland.

Stories in Stone Field Barns

The Stories in Stone project was led by the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust and funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Its aim was to conserve, restore and celebrate the built and cultural heritage of the Ingleborough area. Stone field barns are a distinctive feature of the landscape, originally used to house dairy cattle and the hay to feed them over winter. Many have now fallen into disrepair because of changes in farming methods. The project identified some of the best examples, where owners were willing to undertake repairs with grant assistance. We were employed to oversee works on site and to certify payments.
